Surveying the opinions of the
patient group community
and their members

PatientView frequently surveys the patient group community each year as part of the research for its own publications. PatientView also regularly undertakes surveys of patient groups, patients, and, on occasion, of health professionals, on behalf of others who seek to improve healthcare. Such surveys typically aim to achieve one (or both) of the following two results:

1. Understanding patients' needs
PatientView surveys allow responsible healthcare stakeholders to discover and understand more about the needs of patients. For example: England’s National Audit Office (NAO), an official body that oversees government spending in England, commissioned PatientView to conduct two surveys, and to produce a PatientView report on the findings of each. The NAO project studied England's healthcare service provision for people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The first survey, conducted by PatientView in late 2008, examined the attitudes to the country’s RA services held by 30 English RA patient groups. The second survey, conducted by PatientView in early 2009, considered the same subject from the viewpoint of 1,400 people with RA (and their carers).

2. Detecting perceptual gaps
PatientView identifies instances in which various healthcare stakeholders view the same issue from a very different perspective (sometimes to the detriment of each). The aim is to find ways of bridging gaps in perception.  For example: PatientView co-authored an Interactive Poster on the Key Experiences of Bipolar Disorder, which was exhibited at the European Bipolar Forum (EBF), Budapest, Hungary, in May 2010. In producing the information needed for the Interactive Poster, PatientView studied the differing views of health professionals and patients on the subject of living with bipolar disorder. The project accessed input from the World Federation of Mental Health (WFMH), the Global Alliance of Mental Illnesss Advocacy Networks (GAMIAN), the European Federation of Families with Mental Illness (EUFAMI), the International Review of Bipolar Disorders (IRBD), and the International Society for Bipolar Disorder (ISBD). The InterInteractive Poster project was funded by an educational grant from AstraZeneca.
