]]><![CDATA[Action for Stroke Prevention]]>Sat, 01 Dec 2012 12:07:38 GMThttp://www.patient-view.com/3/post/2012/12/action-for-stroke-prevention.htmlA report published Action for Stroke Prevention, an alliance of renowned health experts and patient organisations supported by Bayer Healthcare, highlighted the widespread problem of atrial fibrillation (AF) as a cause of stroke. AF, or abnormal heart rhythm, increases stroke risk five-fold compared to the general population. AF-related strokes are more serious than those resulting from other causes. Yet the majority of AF-related strokes are preventable. According to the “How Can We Avoid a Stroke Crisis in Europe?”  AF affects 10 million people in Europe alone. The condition is under-diagnosed and undertreated.  Despite the overwhelming fear of stroke and its devastating consequences, a new poll by IPSOS MORI shows that 52% of Europeans are unaware of AF, “highlighting a critical educational challenge for policy makers and healthcare providers”, says the report. Action for Stroke Prevention’s Report was launched at the end of October.

On September 24th 2012, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in a landmark decision announced the appointment of a healthcare director with the specific intention to promote more rapid expansion of mhealth. The healthcare director will act as a central point of contact to external groups on all health-related issues. The decision reflects the commitment of the US government to make wireless technology a routine medical best practice by 2017. Increasingly mhealth is being seen as the most important platform for expanding initiatives on Electronic Health Records. The news is important to patient groups as the FCC has charged itself with assuring patient safety. Thus far patient groups have not yet been dentified as important partners for the FCC.
