Maltese MEP Simon Busuttil describes how two and a half years of concerted action finally paved the way for the EU Diabetes Working Group (EUDWG), which is a set of MEPs from across the main European political groups, to get the European Parliament to adopt a March 14th 2012 resolution on the fight against diabetes. The resolution calls on the European Commission "to develop and implement a targeted EU Diabetes Strategy". Simon Busuttil notes that more than 32 million EU citizens (representing 8.1% of the adult population) are living with diabetes, and, if nothing is done, the figure will rise to 50 million (one tenth of the EU population) by as soon as 2025. The EUDWG is supported and funded by the European Coalition for Diabetes (ECD), an informal collaboration between the Alliance for European Diabetes Research (EURADIA), the Foundation of European Nurses in Diabetes (FEND), the International Diabetes Federation Europe (IDF Europe), and Primary Care Diabetes Europe (PCDE).
