The American Cancer Society (ACS) and the World Lung Foundation (WLF) released the fourth edition of their Tobacco Atlas at the 15th World Conference on Tobacco or Health (WCTOH), held in Singapore in March 2012. The two organizations reported that tobacco use in 2011 killed almost 6 million people worldwide, and that tobacco-related deaths nearly tripled around the world in the past decade. If trends continue during the 21st century, 1 billion people will reportedly die from tobacco use and exposure – 1 person every 6 seconds.
