The topic of local empowerment featured during the 8th Design and Health World Congress and Exhibition, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, June 27th to July 1st 2012.
Why NGOs matter
The subject was also considered in 'Tools to Succeed', a January 2012 article in the journal, World Health Design. Mike Nightingale, founder of the UK firm Nightingale Associates, wrote in the article: "Applying worldwide health planning to developing countries has been shown to bring many benefits. But, for foreign expertise to be valuable, local communities must be consulted, involved, and empowered to help themselves." His article lists case studies of how the skills and resources of NGOs, social enterprises, and designers are empowering local clinicians to deliver practical, low-cost medical care to their communities.
